"Nothin' But Nets" Commercial Fishing and Fishing Families Now Featured

Port Washington, Wisconsin is a fishing town and our home. On the western shores of Lake Michigan, the waters surrounding Port Washington provides ample fishing opportunities throughout the year. While the fishing today is for recreation, commercial fishing was the dominant industry in this area from the 1880's through the 1960s.

Our new exhibit "Nothin' But Nets" chronicles the history and social impact of commercial fishing on the Port Washington area. Through the exhibit the Port Exploreum showcases the lives of the men, women and children who contributed to this important history in the larger context of Wisconsin's proud history of working culture. We are telling the stories of the fishing industry, as well as the families that made that industry come alive through a variety of methods. One important way of telling these stories is through the actual words of family members who lived through this experience. For this exhibit we are including our "Oral History Kiosk" where visitors will be able to hear and see descendants of the fishing families of Port Washington tell their stories.
